# Conditions Based on The Values of Non-parent Fields
In addition, the CoB platform also allows you to define conditions based on the value of any definition field, regardless of whether or not it is the parent field. These conditions can be used with the same operands presented above. The only difference is that the name of the field to which the condition applies to must be inserted before the operand, as in the example included below. Whenever a condition is applied to a non-existing definition field, the value of that field is evaluated as being equal to "" (in other words, an empty value).
Note: Currently, every conditional field needs to be a child of another field - even if the condition depends on the value of a third field that is not the parent field.
